Sussex Academy soccer shuts down Worcester Prep in 5-0 win
Securing the fifth shutout of the season in dominating fashion, Sussex Academy boys’ soccer moved to 6-1 with a 5-0 home win over Worcester Prep Sept. 26. The Seahawks did not allow a shot or corner.
Junior George Sapna opened up the scoring, finishing a pass from captain Andres Romero-Nieto in the 10th minute. Senior Aleksander Danilenko doubled the Seahawks' lead on a beautifully struck ball from about 30 yards out in the 23rd minute. Romero-Nieto put a ribbon on the first-half scoring when he took a pass from keeper C.J. Norton, made some Mallards miss, and finished his run with his 10th goal of the season.
In the 54th minute, junior Liam Stegall scored an unassisted, long-range goal, eliciting plenty of smiles from his teammates who were quite happy with what they witnessed. Freshman Bodhi Williams wrapped up the scoring when he converted a penalty kick 10 minutes later.
The 5-0 shutout victory marked the first time Sussex Academy had not conceded a shot in 2024 and the second time a Seahawks’ opponent was held without a corner kick all game.
On the other end, Sussex Academy generated 15 shots on frame, earned 17 corners, and was awarded two penalty kicks.
Battling Appoquinimink in Middletown Sept. 28, the defense once again dominated and held the Jaguars to two shots and a pair of corners in a 1-0 victory. Although the Seahawks were held to just one corner and three shots, senior Keenan Williams scored the game-winner in the 51st minute off an assist from Ruendi Ortiz-Santos.
Sussex Academy plays Indian River at 5:30 p.m., Tuesday, Oct. 1, in a game that will likely decide the Henlopen South champion.
