Sussex Academy softball scrimmages Seaford

March 18, 2019
In just its second season on the diamond, the Sussex Academy softball program is looking to make a mark in the Henlopen South in 2019.

The Seahawks took on one of the toughest pitchers in the state in Seaford sophomore Jada Evans, and the team performed with confidence at the plate.
“We have a very young team, with some players that haven’t played softball in years,” said Sussex Academy Team Manager Buddy Lynch. “So it was a tough matchup today for them hitting against Jada. She is one of the best pitchers in the state but we hung in there and had some good at-bats.”

“We looked a little rough around the edges today,” added Lynch. “There were a couple of easy plays we didn’t make. But as the weather warms up and we can get more field time, we can work out the kinks.”

Kylee Hutt is lone senior on the Sussex Academy squad. Rylee Pettyjohn is the only junior. Sophomores are Emily Hutt, Rachael Megonigal and Maclovia Richardson. Kylee Forester, Emily Hudson, Emma Kerezsi, Payton Campbell and Paige Tidwell are freshman for the Seahawks. Miranda McIlvaine and Caelynn Rees-Jorgensen round out the team as eighth-graders.

The Seahawks end the preseason Tuesday, March 19, with a home scrimmage with Woodbridge. Sussex Academy begins the regular season Friday, March 22, with a nonconference matchup at home against Newark.
