Sussex Academy sophomore wins Delaware Poetry Out Loud competition

March 25, 2026

Sussex Academy sophomore Natalia Gatti was named the 2026 Delaware Poetry Out Loud champion at the state finals held Feb. 19 at Smyrna Opera House.

“It was such a surreal experience,” Gatti said. “I was shocked to win, as all the students were super talented, and distinct in their style and selections.”

Gatti is the first Sussex Academy student to make it into the final round and to win the state competition.

The 2026 competition featured poems that center around this year’s theme celebrating American history, culture and the nation’s 250th anniversary.

Competing against students from nine other schools, Gatti recited “Militants to Certain Other Women” by Katharine Rolston Fisher, “Let No Charitable Hope” by Elinor Wylie and “To a Young Dancing Girl” by Elsa Gidlow.

Sussex Academy secondary English Department Coordinator Dr. Andie Kirtley, who guided students through the school-based contest, said she was honored to work with all Sussex Academy competitors.

“I am extremely proud of Natalia's passion and dedication,” Kirtley said. “I look forward to watching her bring her talents to the national stage.”

As Delaware’s champion, Gatti will receive a $200 award and represent Delaware at the National Finals set for April 27-29, in Washington, D.C., where she will compete against state champions from across the country for $50,000 in scholarships. Sussex Academy will also receive a $500 stipend to support poetry programming for its students.

In the final round of the contest, participants were asked what they enjoy about poetry.

“I believe that poetry is freedom,” Gatti said. “It is freedom of self, of expression, of love, and I believe that my poetry is my dignity, and that without poetry, there is no life.”
