April 8, 2021

Sussex Academy junior Mikayla Dayton has been selected as a 2021 Carson Scholar.

With this honor, Dayton will receive a $1,000 scholarship that will be invested for her college education.

The Carson Scholar fund awards scholarships to students in grades 4-11 who excel academically and are dedicated to serving their communities. Students must be nominated by a school educator, have a minimum GPA of 3.75 and display humanitarian qualities.

In the last two years, Dayton, a Seaford resident, has participated in numerous extracurricular activities both in and out of school: Team member for Leukemia & Lymphoma Society Service Project; Sussex Academy El Club de Español, student teacher; Miss Seaford 2019; 2021 Miss Delaware’s Outstanding Teen candidate; Sussex Academy Cooking Club founder; Sussex Academy Drama Club, head costume designer; Sussex Academy Creative Writing Club, president and founder; Sussex Academy Green Team, social media manager; Sussex Academy Class of 2022 Council vice president, historian; Sussex Academy National Honor Society; Sussex Academy Mu Alpha Theta Math Honor Society; Possum Juniors, artistic committee member; and Youth in Government, press delegate.

Due to COVID-19, the Carson Scholar spring regional award ceremony has been postponed. Mikayla and her parents Brian and Rita Dayton will be invited to attend the rescheduled event this fall.

Sussex Academy is a public charter, tuition-free school serving grades K-12. The school has elementary and secondary campuses, both centrally located in Georgetown.
