The Sussex Academy volleyball team opened its 2022 Henlopen Conference campaign with a hard-fought 3-2 win over a tough Sussex Central team Sept. 8 at home.
In an intense back-and-forth match, Central won the first set 25-14. The Seahawks took the second 25-21 and the third 25-20. The Golden Knights squeaked out a 25-23 fourth to set up a winner-take-all fifth set, which was pulled out by the Seahawks 15-10.
The Seahawks were led by Danica Duncan with 22 kills. Libero Savannah Montgomery had 24 digs, while Terri Kirschner put up 30 assists.
Sussex Central was led by Takyla Davis’ 18 digs and Leah Sheridan’s 11 kills.
“The energy and cohesiveness as a team we have this season,” said Seahawks head coach Hailee Gooch. “They all work together really well. Our defense did a great job of returning Central’s attacks, and our offense was able to really shine from that.”
The Seahawks host Smyrna Tuesday, Sept. 13, while the Knights host Middletown Monday, Sept. 12.
