Sussex County Relay for Life plans in-person event Sept. 11

Family-friendly fundraiser supports American Cancer Society
August 17, 2021

After a pandemic-required virtual event in 2020, the leadership team for Relay of Life for Sussex County is busy planning for a live event this year, Saturday, Sept. 11, at Sandhill Fields in Georgetown, presented by Beebe Healthcare Tunnell Cancer Center.

Relay for Life is the largest fundraising effort for the American Cancer Society, with events planned in every state and many foreign countries.

Not a race of any kind, Relay for Life honors all survivors and caregivers, and remembers those lost to cancer, while raising funds to support the ongoing work of ACS. While some participants join Relay for Life teams and walk the track to symbolize ongoing efforts to fight and defeat this disease, the event includes fun activities, food, music and a solemn, candlelit luminaria ceremony at dusk to remember all those touched by cancer.

Besides providing public information and support services, the American Cancer Society is the largest nonprofit funder of cancer research. Sussex County volunteers have set a goal of raising $60,000 through Relay for Life.

Relay for Life information tables are at Lewes summer concerts Tuesday nights and Milton concerts in the park Wednesday nights.
