Sussex earns 20th award for financial management

August 17, 2022

Sussex County’s financial management has reached emerald status with another award for two decades of achievements.

The Government Finance Officers Association of the United States and Canada, based in Chicago, in late July awarded the county its Certificate of Achievement for Excellence in Financial Reporting for the 2021 comprehensive annual financial report. The award is among the highest forms of recognition for governmental accounting and financial reporting.

This is the 20th year in a row Sussex County has earned the association's top honor.

The award is an acknowledgment of Sussex County’s comprehensive annual financial report, which was judged by an impartial panel to meet the association’s high standards. The document includes the annual audit showing assets, liabilities, equity, revenues and expenses. It also contains information about county demographics and the local economy. That information helps those reviewing the report – such as investors – to better gauge the county’s financial condition.

“We are honored and humbled once again to be recognized with this very prestigious distinction from our peers,” said Sussex County Finance Director Gina Jennings. “The greatest reward for our financial team, though, is not in winning awards, but in maintaining the public’s trust every day. We take that role very seriously, and I believe the dividends from that commitment are reflected in the county winning honors such as this year after year.”
