Sussex lifeguards receive free skin cancer screenings

June 26, 2025

The Sussex County Lifesaving Association recently announced a successful community partnership with Coastal Dermatology and Big Chill Beach Club.

Free skin cancer screenings and education were provided for all SCLA-affiliated lifeguards. The collaboration underscores a shared commitment to protecting those who dedicate their summers to safeguarding the public along Delaware’s coast.

In a relaxed beachside atmosphere, lifeguards received professional skin evaluations from the skilled team at Coastal Dermatology, whose board-certified specialists volunteered their time and expertise to help detect early signs of skin cancer, a vital service for those who
spend hours in the sun each day.

“This initiative is about taking care of the people who take care of us,” said Matt Farlow, SCLA president. “Our lifeguards are exposed to intense sun exposure all season long, and we’re incredibly grateful to Coastal Dermatology for helping us prioritize their health.”

“We’re proud to play a role in supporting our local heroes,” said Matt Garbutt, director of marketing and branding at Big Chill Beach Club.
