Sussex P&Z wants information from DelDOT

Commissioners hold up vote on Overbrook subdivision a second time
May 8, 2019

The Sussex County Planning and Zoning Commission wants more information on planned road projects before it votes on the Overbrook Meadows West subdivision application. At its April 25 meeting, commissioners deferred on a vote for a second time.

Overbrook Meadows West, Phase 2 of a 217-unit housing project, would contain 82 single-family lots on 43 acres on a section of a 114-acre parcel along Route 1 north of Lewes. Already receiving preliminarily approval from the commission is Overbrook Meadows, a 135-lot single-family cluster subdivision in the rear section of the same parcel on the east side of Route 1.

Commissioner Kim Hoey Stevenson requested that Delaware Department of Transportation officials attend a future meeting to give an overview of proposed work from Route 16 through Five Points.

“I’d like to ask DelDOT about their road work schedule because we need to make an informed decision,” she said.

“We work with them on the capital transportation plan where all the projects are,” said Sussex County Planning and Zoning Director Janelle Cornwell. “I’m sure they can give us an update. There are a lot of projects going on.”

DelDOT officials have pledged to spend $1 billion on transportation infrastructure in the Cape Region over the next six years.

DelDOT representatives attending the meeting said a presentation could be arranged.

Commission Chairman Bob Wheatley said he wanted to make it clear that the presentation would not be about a specific project. “It’s information we would like to have moving forward,” he said.

“It would be a holistic approach to capital transportation plans projects being worked on,” Cornwell added.

Subdivision applications are voted on only by the commission and not by county council.
