Sussex Republican women’s fashion fundraiser a success

December 5, 2019

The Sussex County Republican Women’s Club members wish to thank all those who worked tirelessly to present this year’s fall fundraiser Oct. 20 at Mulligan’s Pointe Golf Club in Georgetown.

Hats off to models Patricia Anderson, Ruth Briggs King, Sherry Long and Gale White as well as their escorts, Rep. Ron Gray, R-Selbyville, Rep. Steve Smyk, R-Milton, and U.S. congressional candidate Lee Murphy, who strutted their stuff during the fashion show presented by Twila Farrell of Lewes.

In addition to the fashion show and luncheon, attendees had the opportunity to bid on items of all types graciously donated by many local merchants.

The baking talent of many members was on display at the dessert table as well as the bake sale. Baker extraordinaire Linda Rehm created all the beautiful centerpieces, favors and a delicious sheet cake commemorating the 19th Amendment. There were many confectionary delights to satisfy every sweet-toothed attendee and at the end of the day, every item was sold.

Those present also celebrated the centennial anniversary of women’s right to vote by playing a suffragette game developed by club members. Winners received a Susan B. Anthony silver dollar.

Marilyn Booker, event co-chair, Mindy Goss and Patricia Oliphant played their part by dressing in period garb.

Delaware has a great history of women rising to prominence in their fields of endeavor. The state’s first pediatrician was Dr. Margaret I. Handy in 1917. In 1923, Cecile L. Steele of Ocean View founded the Delmarva broiler industry that launched Sussex County’s poultry industry.

So many courageous women came before and cleared the way so today’s women can have a voice in shaping communities and the world for the better.

It is the mission of the Sussex County Republican Women’s Club to assist in the election of Republican candidates, act as an advocate for the Republican Party’s principles, and empower women to participate in the political process. Sussex County’s is the largest Republican Women’s Club in Delaware, and has been actively engaging women in the political process for more than 60 years.
