Sussex Tech baseball beats Cape Henlopen 2-1
Will Bayko of Sussex Tech was thrown out at third base in the top of the seventh inning versus Cape Henlopen in a game played April 30 before 200 fans at Sports at the Beach, but his RBI double had chased home what proved to be the winning run in a 2-1 victory for the Ravens.
'It felt really good to get a big hit and help the team win," Bayko said. "We've been losing some close games."
The game was scoreless through the first four innings, dominated by pitchers Diaz Nardo of Cape and Shane Marvel of Sussex Tech. The Vikings did commit four errors behind Nardo, which led to extra outs for the Ravens as Nardo's pitch count swelled, causing coach Dave Doherty to lift him after five innings.
The Ravens' first run was unearned when, with two outs and a runner on third, a high fly ball to right field was lost in the lights by Cody Dmiterchik, who had made a spectacular play on the dead run earlier in the game to keep the Ravens off the board.
In the bottom of the inning Jake Dmiterchik got a fastball up in the zone and didn't miss it, leaving the ball yard over the right center field fence, tying the game at 1.
"I don't mind giving up a run that's earned," said Sussex Tech coach Ethan Long. "Shane made a mistake on the pitch and Dmiterchik made him pay for it."
The Ravens have been coached over the spring break by Long and G.L. Jefferson while head coach Tom Pegelow takes some "personal reasons" downtime.
Jefferson said of the 2-1 Ravens victory, "This was a huge win for us just to get the monkey off our backs of losing close games. It was just a great overall game. Hats off to Cape and Nardo and, of course Shane [Marvel], for pitching a one-hitter.
Long echoed the sentiments of Jefferson. "That was baseball the way baseball should be. It's a shame somebody had to lose it, but we lost our previous two games because we didn't get that big hit."
Coach Dave Doherty scheduled the Sussex Tech game under the lights, wanting his up-and-coming Cape team to know the feeling of playing on the big stage.
"Sussex Tech was the No. 1 team in the state to start the season, and I would have liked to come up with the bigger number, but you see how happy they were to win. That is a tribute and shows we are getting respect. We will be in some big games the rest of this season, and this will help us."
Cape, 4-6, plays at 2-10 Laurel Tuesday, May 3, and at 2-0 Lake Forest Thursday, May 5.
The Ravens are scheduled to play at Indian River Monday, May 2, then will host Delmar Tuesday, May 3.
