Sussex Tech CNA training program begins Jan. 7

December 1, 2018

Sussex Tech Adult Education is now seeking applicants for an enhanced certified nursing assistant program. Grant funds are available for financial assistance to qualified applicants through the State of Delaware Blue Collar Grant.

“We are looking for people who are highly motivated and want to get ready for work,” said Kimley Hines, health professions coordinator with Sussex Tech’s Adult Education Division. “If you want to get into the rapidly expanding healthcare field, give your family a boost, and upgrade your career, this opportunity may be for you.”

The Enhanced Certified Nursing Assistant program prepares students for a variety of jobs in many different healthcare settings – hospitals, nursing homes, doctor’s offices, clinics and more. For details, call 302-853-1492 or email kimley.hines@sussexvt.k12.de.us.

The training program runs 7:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., Monday to Friday, with 75 hours of classroom and lab training at Sussex Tech; 72 hours of enhanced training in phlebotomy, EKG and dementia care; and an additional 75 hours of clinical training at a local healthcare facility. The training will prepare students for the state certification exam to become a certified nursing assistant, or CNA. Advanced CNA classes begin Monday, Jan. 7, and basic classes begin Monday, Jan. 22.

Nursing assistant jobs are projected to grow 11 percent over the next decade, faster than the average growth for all jobs, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. Delaware has about 4,800 nursing assistant jobs statewide, with the average annual salary at $29,740, according to federal statistics.
