Suzanne Truitt, local Realtor, RHS athlete
Suzanne Truitt, a local realtor and outstanding high school athlete, passed away peacefully on May 18, 2025, in Sarasota, Florida.
Sue was a Beebe baby born in Lewes Aug. 20, 1943, and lived most of her life in the Rehoboth Beach area. She was a 1961 graduate of the former Rehoboth High School, where she was a standout in field hockey, basketball, and softball, scoring 42 points in one high school basketball game and being named best girl athlete of her class. She was also captain of the Rehoboth High cheerleaders and was selected as the first downstate girl to serve as a cheerleader in the annual Blue-Gold football game held at University of Delaware Stadium in Newark.
She was a longtime member of Epworth United Methodist Church in Rehoboth Beach, where she was baptized, and attended and taught Sunday school. She continued to attend Epworth until she moved to Sarasota, Fla., in 2024.
Sue was predeceased by her parents, James and Dorothy Truitt of Rehoboth Beach; and an unnamed baby brother, who died just after birth in 1938. She is survived by two brothers, James S. Truitt Jr. of Rehoboth Beach, and Roger Truitt (Patricia) of Rehoboth Beach and Lakewood Ranch, Fla. She also is survived by many nieces, nephews, grand-nieces and -nephews, and great-grand-nieces and -nephews, whom she loved and with whom she kept in touch.
Academically, Sue was a top student at Rehoboth High School, where she was in Honor Society, Student Council, and selected to represent her high school at Delaware Girls’ State. She continued her education at University of Delaware and Goldey-Beacom College, where she graduated with honors and a degree in business.
Sue worked for 10 years in Wilmington as an administrative assistant for the DuPont family’s personal investment businesses before coming home to Rehoboth in 1975 to own and operate Truitt Homes, where she sold manufactured homes for 12 years. In the meantime, she became a real estate broker and associate in Delaware and Pennsylvania. For more than 40 years, she had a successful career helping clients find, buy, sell, and finance their homes and other properties in the beach area, working primarily for Mann & Sons. Along the way, Sue also obtained real estate licenses in Maryland and Florida, and earned many real estate certifications.
Sue loved her three dogs, sitting outside by the pool, playing golf, picking crabs, and attending family gatherings. She made new friends easily and enjoyed gathering with high school alumni and her “gal friends.” Sue was so proud of her nieces and nephews and their children and grandchildren, and loved commending them on their accomplishments.
She also enjoyed traveling with friends and family to faraway places like Hawaii, Australia, New Zealand, Alaska, Thailand, England, Scotland, Paris, Seattle, Bermuda, Las Vegas, and Florida, where she owned a second home for 10 years. In recent years, Sue resided at the Lodge at Truitt Homestead, which was built on her grandparents’ farm off Shuttle Road in Rehoboth, as well as at Grand Living in Sarasota, Fla.
A Celebration of Life for Suzanne will be held at 3 p.m., Saturday, July 5, at Epworth United Methodist Church, 19285 Holland Glade Road, Rehoboth Beach, where visitation will begin at 2 p.m. Interment will be private. A reception will follow the services in the church hall.
