Broadkill Beach residents can enjoy more than just having their iconic general store reopen for the 2020 summer season Friday, May 1.
To celebrate its reopening, the team at Swell Joe Coffee will be donating free cups of coffee to shoppers who visit Broadkill Store Friday and Saturday, May 1 and 2.
Dave and Sharon Vitella, together with Drew and Karen Johnson, own and operate Swell Joe, a Lewes-based coffee roastery that supplies beans to Cape Region grocers, restaurants and other businesses.
Karen Johnson said, “We’re definitely seeing a shift now as more restaurant clients are decreasing their wholesale bulk coffee orders while essential businesses like grocers are increasing their retail bag orders. We’re running a small-batch roastery, and as active owners/operators, we are also managing every aspect of our coffee business. We’re nimble and can pivot quickly to accommodate our customers’ shifting needs.”
Broadkill Store is considered an essential business, and therefore it is able to open its doors during the current pandemic-related restrictions. “As the only business on Broadkill Beach, we’re grateful to be able to serve the Broadkill Beach residents each summer,” said co-owner Ed Hilligoss. “We’re also committed to providing locally sourced, high-quality products whenever possible, and Swell Joe Coffee fits in perfectly at our store.”
During the summer, Broadkill Store plans to sell Swell Joe by the cup as well as 12 oz. bags of ground coffee.
Hilligoss and his wife Deb purchased the Broadkill Store in 2019 along with eight other Broadkill Beach neighbors including Tina and Mike Hilligoss, Shane and Erin McCarthy, Lisa and Bob Conte, and Missey and Jeff Mulveny.
Swell Joe is a locally owned and operated small-batch coffee roastery located just steps away from the original Surf Bagel at 17382 Coastal Highway in Lewes.
