Sylvan Learning to offer tutoring, enrichment activities

A tutoring and enrichment center for students opened Sept. 1 under the leadership of former Rehoboth Elementary special education teacher and Cape High grad Jason Blanshine.

Blanshine said he used to tutor students after school, and he really enjoyed the one-on-one interaction without the extra paperwork involved in a public school setting.

“I felt like I was not teaching that much anymore,” he said. “I was doing more prep and extra stuff than teaching.”

Blanshine said his wife Katie, a Cape district speech pathologist who grew up in Rochester, N.Y., told him about Sylvan Learning, a K-12 supplemental and enrichment education company.

“The more I looked into it, the more I learned it could really help our community,” he said. “It was a big leap for me, but I’m bringing something to the area that’s not here. I think it will be well-received by the community.”

The Sylvan Learning format provides tutoring and enrichment activities to students in kindergarten through 12th grade, Blanshine said, although he has also worked with older preschoolers and rising college freshmen who needed extra help.

Studies will focus on core subjects reading, math and writing, as well as after-school homework help and effective study skills in all academic areas, Blanshine said. SAT/ACT test prep sessions and STEM activities such as robotics and coding are also offered, he added.

Blanshine said he has partnered with Factory Sports in Lewes to offer school-model instruction from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Factory, where students can participate in school Zoom sessions in socially distanced desks on the basketball courts. Extracurricular activities, games and sports will also be offered throughout the day, Blanshine said.

Programs began virtually Sept. 1, with the facility opening in late October, Blanshine said.

The Blanshines’ three children attend Cape schools; Gabriel is a rising second-grader at Rehoboth Elementary, and Maddox and Delaney attend Little Vikings Preschool.
