Temporary light needed to create Route 1 traffic breaks

July 15, 2025

In reading a recent viewpoint concerning Route 1 road safety, I had this thought. Perhaps this is being considered or already in the pipeline. If not, here it is. Until such time that all of the improvements are completed between Route 16 and Lewes, can’t we consider putting in a temporary traffic light just before the southbound Route 16 overpass to re-create the traffic break? To avoid unnecessary stoppage, perhaps it could be set to be active only during busy periods (daytime only, June through August, etc.). Having the traffic stopped for as little as one minute would likely solve the problem. The thousands this may cost to set up temporarily will be more than offset by lives saved, which no one can quantify, along with the cost of auto repairs, insurance, and police and EMS response. Hope this helps.
