The name of Thomas Merton, a spiritual leader and writer, means a lot to countless spiritual people all over the world. Women of this area who want to learn more about Merton and his work may attend a Thomas Merton Retreat from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., Friday, April 24, at St. George’s Episcopal Chapel parish hall on Route 23 near Harbeson. A light lunch and refreshment breaks will be offered. There is a $15 registration fee.

“Thomas Merton was born Jan. 31, 1915,” said the Rev. Eunice Dunlap, retreat presenter and assistant rector of The Parish of All Saints’ Church and St. George’s Chapel. “We celebrate his 100th year anniversary this year, so it’s a good time to be acquainted or reacquainted with his life and work. I’m going to address this retreat in three different sections: Thomas Merton’s life before the monastery, his call to monastic spirituality and how his life changed, and his integration of contemplation and action.”

“This workshop will include practical steps that people can use in their lives,” said Dunlap. “It’s not just for monks or intellectuals. In his life, Merton communicated to all levels of life and especially to those who feel that they are on a spiritual journey.”

Dunlap came to the Parish of All Saints’ Church and St. George’s Chapel in September after serving two different Episcopal parishes in North Carolina. She and the rector, the Rev. Max Wolf, alternate Sunday services at All Saints’ Church in Rehoboth Beach and St. George’s in Harbeson. On the first Wednesday of each month, Dunlap conducts a noon Celtic eucharist at St. George’s.

After early career experience in advertising, and voice study with a voice coach from the Julliard School of Music in New York City, Dunlap continued her early spiritual education interest, obtaining her master of divinity degree at Bangor Theological Seminary in Maine, and serving as a licensed minister in the United Church of Christ. She then returned to her childhood training and Episcopal upbringing.

She began studies to become an Episcopal priest, completed a certificate in Anglican Studies at Virginia Episcopal Theological Seminary, and was ordained in 2003. Dunlap has three grown sons. Two are in the U.S Marines. A third son is currently getting a master’s degree in elementary education.

To register in advance for the Thomas Merton Retreat, send a $15 check payable to St. George's ECW to Cathy Graden, ECW treasurer, 122 Loganberry Lane, Rehoboth Beach, DE 19971. Deadline for mail registration is Friday, April 17.
