The July 4 Dewey Beach Liquors 5K welcomed 510 runners with instructions to run down Dagsworthy Avenue then turn left at the liquor store.
Leader Nick Troiano, 18, veered to the right before a hard turn to the left, while veteran ultra runner Mike Wardian, who knew how to cut corners, took the early lead and led to the final straight away coming home. But Troiano ran him down.
“He got me,“ Mike said with a smile before running back onto the course to escort his son Pierce, 18, to the finish line. Pierce finished with a time of 21:36.
Troiano ran 16:36 to beat Wardian by six seconds. Younger brother Matt Troiano, 15, placed fifth overall in 17:59.
Amelia Avila, 16, of Olney, Md., was the women’s winner in 18:44. Michelle Simon, 46, of Shaker Heights, Ohio, won the women’s masters division in 21:28.
Local Maya Yngve, 17, born on the Fourth of July, ran her 5K in 26:13. Local Bobby Hutton, 61, won the 60-64 age group in 20:00. Woody Disharoon, 76, of Laurel, won the 75-79 division in 30:38.
