Uday Jani of Milton named a Top Doctor in Concierge Medicine

August 27, 2020

Uday Jani, MD, has been named one of Concierge Medicine Today’s biennial Top Doctors in Concierge Medicine for 2020-21, a distinction earned every two years by 25 physicians, fewer than 1 percent of doctors across the country.

CMT surveys physicians, patients, communities and staff for nearly two years before selecting the final list, basing recognition on factors including use of innovative technologies, value-added services inside the practice, charitable participation in the community, patient reviews, medical and social influence, educational efforts and other relevant indicators.

“Every doctor on this list has made a significant impact on their patients, peers, community and state,” said Michael Tetreault, CMT editor. “We’ve learned over the years that great doctors understand in today’s culture, it’s about not about being the best doctor in the world, but being the best doctor for the world and the community in which they live and work.”

Jani’s integrative concierge medicine practice, Shore View Personalized Medical Care in Milton, has grown every year since its 2014 launch, fueled by his commitment to exceptional patient care and the well-being of Delaware’s coastal community. His blend of traditional and integrative medicine in a concierge model has completely changed the patient experience. He describes his moment of truth eight years ago, at the end of an all-too-typical day of rushing from patient to patient.

“I was already two-and-a-half hours behind, and when I rushed into the exam room, there was my 85-year-old patient who was really sick with pneumonia patiently sitting and waiting for me. When I asked her ‘Why didn’t you call me earlier and come in?’ she said, ‘Oh I didn’t want to bother you; you are so busy all the time.’ That was the day I decided I can’t change the system, but I can change the way I practice medicine and give care to my patients,” said Jani.

His approach to pain management, for example, is multifaceted, addressing all aspects of health including sleep, nutrition, activity and spirituality. “This is virtually impossible to achieve in a traditional practice where 15-minute visits are the norm. I’m continually grateful for the time enabled by practicing concierge medicine, allowing me to be fully present and listen to the patient’s story, and build a deeply meaningful connection.”

CMT also noted Jani’s numerous complimentary lectures at libraries, farmers markets, Beebe Healthcare and other local venues; leadership in community charities such as the Rotary Club and Harry K Foundation; and visible presence in social and traditional media. An avid runner and a believer in the integral role of exercise in ensuring optimal health, he has participated in multiple 5K races and half-marathons to benefit nonprofit organizations, and encouraged his patients, their families and friends to take part as well.

Jani said he believes, “True health is about more than mind, body and spirit. It’s about forming a community around you.”

He has also served as a calming voice throughout the COVID-19 crisis. Early in March, Jani’s talk on staying healthy and stress-free during the pandemic drew more than 110 people to the Lewes library. When his second talk at the Milton library later that week was canceled due to shelter-in-place orders, he instead shared reassuring insights with Dan Gaffney on local radio station 105.9.

Shore View patients benefited greatly from Jani’s continued outreach and attention during the pandemic shutdown, which included frequent informational email and video updates, a telemedicine platform for virtual visits, and personal phone calls to check in on the most vulnerable members of his practice.

“Concierge doctors focus on restoring the powerful physician-patient relationship, have a real opportunity to make a difference, and that was more evident than ever during the pandemic,” said Terry Bauer, CEO of Specialdocs, the healthcare consulting firm that assisted Jani with his transition to concierge care. “We congratulate Dr. Jani for his innovative approach to caring for patients, and earning this well-deserved recognition as one of the top concierge physicians in the country.”

The Top Doctors in Concierge Medicine list includes some of the nation’s most respected specialists and outstanding primary care physicians, recognized by patients, peers and other healthcare professionals as the best in their fields, according to Concierge Medicine Today. They do not pay a fee and are not paid to be listed. Nominations from current and former patients, employees, medical professionals and colleagues are reviewed, and each nominee is evaluated on patient satisfaction levels, community involvement, continued innovation in the delivery of healthcare services and other relevant indicators.

Uday Jani, MD, is a board-certified internist who uses an evidence-based integrative approach to care at his concierge practice, Shore View Personal Care in Milton. He completed a two-year integrative medicine fellowship at the University of Arizona, recognized as the leading integrative medicine program in the world, followed by training at the Institute for Functional Medicine in Minneapolis, Minn. In 2020, Jani was honored as the Top Integrative Medicine Physician in the state of Delaware by Delaware Today.
