UUSD to host mindfulness workshop Sept. 10

August 20, 2018

The Unitarian Universalists of Southern Delaware will host a workshop on mindfulness from 1 to 3 p.m., Monday, Sept. 10.

Dr. Doris Lauckner, a licensed psychologist and licensed professional counselor of mental health, will conduct the two-hour workshop at UUSD, 30486 Lewes-Georgetown Highway, Lewes. Participants will learn about mindfulness and how to cultivate more mindfulness in one’s life. The workshop is open to the public.

Lauckner said, “Being mindful means being fully present and aware in a non-judgmental and non-reactive manner. Mindfulness is an inherent quality that all naturally possess. Scientific research has demonstrated that enhancing mindfulness helps to decrease stress. As well, enhancing mindfulness in our day-to-day lives can bring many emotional, mental and physical health benefits. Perhaps, most importantly, mindfulness can help you to live your life more fully. In its deepest sense, mindfulness helps you recognize we only have today, and we only have this moment.”

Lauckner received her PhD in counseling psychology at Seton Hall University, where she specialized in health psychology. She has been practicing psychology and counseling for the past 30 years. Presently, Lauckner is chair of the clinical mental health counseling program at Wilmington University, where she has been an educator for the past 18 years.

In addition to her professional interests in mental health and education, Lauckner has an avid interest in Buddhism and mindfulness practices. She was trained in mindfulness-based stress reduction by Jon Kabat-Zinn and Saki Santorelli. Lauckner herself has a meditation practice and has attended numerous meditation retreats. She has been providing workshops in mindfulness and meditation for the past several years.

A $10 donation is requested for the workshop. Preregistration is not required. Proceeds will support UUSD’s mission to nurture spiritual growth, embrace diversity, work for justice and strive for a loving world.
