The Cape boys’ basketball team jumped out to an 11-0 lead against Sussex Tech Jan. 20, and never looked back, as the Vikings ran the clock for a 66-36 victory over the Ravens.
The Vikings move to 10-2, while the Ravens fall to 1-10.
Powering out to a 13-4 first-quarter lead, Cape went into halftime up 30-14. The Vikings sliced through the Ravens’ defense to a 36-22 second half, garnering a running clock down the stretch.
Junior Jameson Tingle racked up 18 points, seven rebounds, six assists, three blocks and three steals. Braxton Figgs tallied 10 points, eight rebounds and two blocks.
Juniors Oz Batson and Geordan Downing each scored eight points. They teamed for seven rebounds and five assists. Junior point guard Stephen Sivels had seven points and three assists. Seniors Lawson Whaley and Dell Richards each pulled in four rebounds.
Tech senior Jason Warrington was high scorer for the Ravens with 11 points.
“It feels great to win tonight,” said Cape senior David Barnes. “It was just another game that we have to take it slow. We have a lot of season left. It we play as a team, we’ll be OK.”
A special moment in the game occurred when senior Lawson Whaley scored his first varsity points.
“It felt really great to finally get a basket,” said Whaley. “All of my friends are here and they were cheering me on. You could hear everyone get loud when I got the ball. The coaches and players were awesome cheering for me. It’s my first year playing on the team. I just wanted to come out and play. It’s really fun. All of my teammates are great.”
“To me, Tech is Tech,” said Cape coach Steve Re. “We always have to play hard. And you have [former Cape player Tony Hazzard] on the other bench. He’s a good coach. I have to coach hard against him. He was was one of the best teammates we’ve ever had at Cape. A great guy.”
Hazzard played on Re’s Henlopen Conference Championship team in 2013.
“Getting a win like this is nice. We just have to stay focused, get our work in and continue playing hard,” Re said.
Dan has worked for the Cape Gazette for more than 30 years as a photographer and reporter, covering high school sports and happenings around eastern Sussex County. He won a photography award from the National Newspaper Association, and numerous awards from the Maryland, Delaware, D.C. Press Association. A Delaware native, Dan graduated from Cape in 1972 and returned as a teacher and coach in the 1980s. He retired from the classroom in 2016. He was inducted into Cape High’s Legends Stadium in 2016.
