The Delmarva Christian girls’ basketball team hosted a three-team play day Nov. 23 in a local meeting of Eastern Shore Independent Athletic Conference, Henlopen North and Henlopen South teams. It was a game-situation scrimmage where the three teams were able to identify weaknesses as well as strengths and work on lineups.
The Cape team won the Henlopen Conference championship over Lake Forest in 2022 and fell to Sanford in the third round of the DIAA state tournament. Lost to graduation were Ella Rishko, Lauryn Head, Morgan Mahoney, Mehkia Applewhite, Kelly Bragg and Julia Saleur.
Delmarva Christian went 15-5 in 2022, but fell to Cape in the first round of the state tournament. Royals who graduated are Kaela Mitchell and Sierra Troyer.
Woodbridge went 16-7 in 2022 and fell to Caravel in the third round of the state tournament.
The Vikings will open the regular season Tuesday, Dec. 6, at Caravel, while the Royals play at Milford Friday, Dec. 2. The Raiders travel to Lake Forest Tuesday, Dec. 13.
Dan has worked for the Cape Gazette for more than 30 years as a photographer and reporter, covering high school sports and happenings around eastern Sussex County. He won a photography award from the National Newspaper Association, and numerous awards from the Maryland, Delaware, D.C. Press Association. A Delaware native, Dan graduated from Cape in 1972 and returned as a teacher and coach in the 1980s. He retired from the classroom in 2016. He was inducted into Cape High’s Legends Stadium in 2016. In his spare time, Dan enjoys spending time with his wife, two sons, grandchildren and dogs.
