Village Volunteers does wonderful work for Cape Region’s seniors

September 30, 2025

Three years ago, I was seriously considering selling my house and moving to a senior-living apartment closer to two of my children. Then I attended a meeting at my development’s clubhouse where Jackie Sullivan, the then-executive director of Village Volunteers, gave an inspiring talk about how the organization supports older adults in our community.

Jackie explained how volunteers – many of them newly retired and eager to stay active – help members remain independent in their own homes. Volunteers drive members to medical appointments, hair salons, grocery stores, cultural events and even their favorite local shops. Others stop by for friendly visits, lend a hand with paperwork, checkbooks, plants or minor household chores. Still others run errands, pick up prescriptions, walk dogs or provide help with technology. Behind the scenes, volunteers answer phones, schedule rides, keep records and provide vital office support.

That evening, I signed up. After a warm interview and orientation, I began driving members on trips that fit around my schedule. Along the way, I discovered fascinating stories from people who had retired from remarkable careers. Later, I started assisting in the office, taking service requests and connecting members with volunteers.

Through Village Volunteers, I’ve not only found meaningful ways to give back, but also discovered a renewed sense of purpose in my own life. These experiences have convinced me to stay in my home, surrounded by a community I love. And when members thank me for a ride or a friendly conversation, I sometimes joke that I’m just earning another feather for my wings.

Our Village Volunteers office is located in Lewes on Kings Highway, serving residents of Lewes, Rehoboth and Milton. Our current Executive Director Anna Moshier and our Member Services Manager Emily Buckingham are now at the helm, welcoming new members and engaging volunteers. If any readers are looking to spread a little joy as a volunteer, please consider my appeal. And for anyone needing the kinds of services I’ve described, Village Volunteers would be happy to help – call 302-703-2568.
