Visiting the Mont-Saint-Michel Abbey while touring France with Cape Gazette

November 2, 2022

Ron and Pat Schaeffer of Millsboro toured France for two weeks in early September. They visited Mont-Saint-Michel, the tidal island on France’s northwestern coast just south of the Normandy D-Day beaches, which they also visited. The island is surrounded by a bay and is a UNESCO world heritage site. There is an 11th-century medieval Christian abbey at the top with a small village at the base of the island. It’s a steep walk up to the abbey, and it was repaired after a major fire in the 12th century and added to again in the 17th and 18th centuries. It is a popular tourist and pilgrimage location for Catholics.
