Volunteers needed to plant pollinator garden in Lewes Nov. 9

October 30, 2019

The Delaware Native Plant Society is seeking volunteers to assist with work in the native plant garden at the University of Delaware College of Earth, Ocean and Environment campus in Lewes at 10 a.m., Saturday, Nov. 9.

This collaborative effort between the University of Delaware and the Delaware Native Plant Society has to date included renovation and addition of plants to the southern portion of the native plant garden, removal of non-native species, and installation of a new crushed-stone pathway.

The upcoming volunteer work day will be focused on preparing the ground and sowing native plant seeds in a bare area of the site. Slated to be one of the largest pollinator gardens in Delaware, the current project area covers just under 4,000 square feet.

“We are all very excited about this project. The DNPS has obtained seed of 14 species of plants that are native to the coastal plain of Delaware. The plants will help to create a diverse and colorful habitat for pollinators, including many species of butterflies and native bees," said Eric Zuelke, DNPS treasurer and membership coordinator.

This event is free to the public. Lunch and refreshments will be provided.

The campus is at  700 Pilottown Road, Lewes. The native plant garden is on the north side of the Marine Studies Library building.

If possible, attendees are asked to wear boots and gloves, and bring stiff-tined rakes for loosening up soil. A few extra rakes will be on hand to borrow.

The Delaware Native Plant Society was formed in 1998 to promote the use of native plants in the landscape. The society boasts a diverse group of dedicated individuals ranging from novice gardeners to professional botanists. It offers volunteer opportunities including habitat improvement and reforestation projects.
