The City of Lewes, in partnership with Lewes In Bloom, will have its annual tulip dig from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m., Wednesday, May 2, with a rain date of Thursday, May 3. No early birds may begin before 8 a.m.
The public is invited to bring their shovels, spades, trowels and bags to assist the city and Lewes In Bloom with removing tulip bulbs and giving them new homes. Close to 20,000 tulip bulbs were planted by Lewes In Bloom for the 9th Annual Tulip Celebration.
Areas included in the tulip dig are 1812 Park, Citizens Bank on Second Street, city hall, Canalfront Park butterfly garden area next to the Net House, Gateway Garden (island between Kings and Freeman highways), Lewes Public Library, Mary Vessels Park, Otis Smith Park (near Rotary Pavilion), post office, Stango Park, St. Peter's Church rain barrels and Zwaanandael Park.
The public is reminded that only the areas listed above are included in the tulip dig. Digging cannot occur before 8 a.m. or in areas not listed. Each dig location will be supervised by a Lewes In Bloom member or parks and recreation commissioner. No other plants or flowers besides tulips are to be removed. Volunteers should bring their own gloves, trowel and bags.
