Volunteers share creative craftsmanship at Camp Arrowhead
Some superheroes arrive wearing capes, but the ones who showed up at Camp Arrowhead came with tool belts, big hearts and a whole lot of know-how. Drawn to the camp's mission and community spirit, Sean McCormick, Jack Hartford and Mike Ziegler, affectionately known as A.L.E.R.T. (A League of Extraordinary Retired Teachers), have become an indispensable part of life at Camp Arrowhead, bringing with them creativity, craftsmanship and their signature good humor.
When Camp Arrowhead needed a float for the Rehoboth Christmas Parade, A.L.E.R.T. didn't hesitate. They hand-built a scaled replica of one of Camp Arrowhead's iconic Pioneer Units, complete with such charming detail that it may or may not have had working miniature plumbing. What is known for sure: The tiny cabin turned heads, warmed hearts and inspired shouts of, "I went to Camp Arrowhead back in the ‘80s!" from excited parade-goers.
The crew didn't stop there. A.L.E.R.T. also built a giant Adirondack chair that became an instant favorite. Whether for campers, retreat guests, or wedding party members, this oversized seat offers a photo op so epic it could make Instagram jealous and practically demands its own hashtag.
When Camp Nurse Cindy Myers wished for a weather-protected, accessible space to share donated children's books from Lewes Public Library Children's Librarian Jennifer Noonan, A.L.E.R.T. sprang into action. McCormick brought materials home and built a custom library cupboard, which he and fellow volunteers Hartford and Ziegler installed that same week. The result is not only beautifully crafted; it's also rumored to include a tiny librarian who shushes passersby with flair.
"These gentlemen are basically the MacGyvers of Camp Arrowhead," said Executive Director Darlene Calton with a laugh. "They show up with tools, a twinkle in their eye, and a can-do spirit that makes you wonder if they've found the fountain of youth — or just really good coffee."
Camp Arrowhead extends its heartfelt thanks (and maybe a few extra s'mores) to Sean, Jack, and Mike for their unwavering dedication. Their work is a heartwarming reminder of what's possible when community, creativity and a little retired-teacher magic come together.
