W. Scott Broadfoot joins artists of Gallery One

April 8, 2019

The artists of Gallery One in Ocean View are excited to welcome a new partner, W. Scott Broadfoot.

Broadfoot brings a unique perspective born of a lifetime of devotion to art in the classical and realist tradition that recalls the style and approach of the Old Masters. He prefers to work from life by first completing drawings of his subject on-site with pen and ink. Later, in his studio, the sketches are expanded into full-scale paintings.

His oil paintings are often developed from many different drawings of the same subject, which helps him capture its likeness and mood. Broadfoot’s method of working also reflects his passion for art history and tradition. He prefers to grind his own oil paints by hand with powdered color pigments that are then combined with cooked oils and resins, and he makes his own drawing ink from walnuts grown locally in Maryland. The richness and detail that his process creates is truly stunning and seldom seen with today’s more contemporary approaches.

Broadfoot’s artistic training has been classical as well. He spent years in serious instruction with famed painter Earl Hofmann, the noted and respected Baltimore Six Realist founder.

Broadfoot holds a bachelor’s degree in art from St. Mary’s College of Maryland and a master of fine arts degree from Catholic University in Washington, D.C.

His work is in numerous private collections. He has exhibited in many galleries in the region, primarily in Baltimore and Bethesda, Md., and locally at the Ocean City, Md. and Rehoboth art leagues. His current studio is in Fenwick Island, where his work is influenced by the beauty of the local landscape.

Gallery One is open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., seven days a week, and is always staffed by an artist. The address is 32 Atlantic Ave., Route 26, Ocean View.
