Walter “Walt” Kieran Ramsey left this life at 87 in Glen Mills, Pa.
Walter was the loving father of Allyson (Ira) Dworkin, Jennifer Ramsey, Kieran (Heather) Ramsey, William (Cathy) Ramsey, and Andrea (Frank) Mannino, and grandfather of Anna and Samuel Weiss, Amanda Dworkin, Connor and Aidan Ramsey, and Liam and Ellen Ramsey. He was a proud member of the Ancient Order of Hibernians Division 7 in East Islip, N.Y., and marched several times with them in the NYC St. Patrick's Day Parade. He was the Master of Ceremonies for the Bayport-Blue Point St. Patrick's Day Parade from its inception in 1990 until 2018. In 2018, he served as its grand marshal. Walt was also a member of the Our Lady of the Snow Parish in Blue Point, N.Y. Walt gladly participated in charitable activities such as the St. Baldrick Foundation, Long Beach Polar Bear Swim, and Ray Downey Forever Running Memorial 5k.
Born in Brooklyn, N.Y., Walt graduated from Manual Training High School. He received his B.S. in education from SUNY Oswego and his M.S. from Colby College in Maine. He taught the sciences in school districts on Long Island, most notably North Babylon, St. Dominic, and Center Moriches. Upon retiring, he continued to tutor high school and college students in the sciences. Walt will be remembered by his family and many others for his larger-than-life personality, his baritone singing on nearly every occasion (and his equally loud laughter), his love for the Great American Songbook and the Sunday crossword, and his Irish-American wit.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m., Monday, Aug. 4, at St. Jude the Apostle Church, 152 Tulip Drive, Lewes, where friends and family may visit from 10 to 11 a.m.
