The WaterMel Run 5K was contested Aug. 3, starting and returning to American Legion Post 17 in Lewes. The seventh annual event attracted 94 recorded finishers, several walkers and a bevy of kids who ran the final straightaway chasing their parents.
Reigning Mar-Del Watermelon Queen Caroline Allen was the official starter.
Thomas Metkus, 44, of Timonium, Md., was overall winner in 17:17. He was chased by the Harrington Harrier Matt Sparacino, 47, who placed second overall in 18:00 to win the male masters title.
Lindsay Crow, 42, of Columbia, Md., was the first female in 20:17. Mary Jo Gilligan, 51, of Middletown won the female masters race in 24:49.
Kathy Kay, 55, of Lewes won her age group in 25:05, while her son Jared Kay won his age group in 23:55.
April Anderson, 80, of Millsboro won the 70-99 age group in 41:13. Capt. Kevin Molloy, 77, of Lewes, a Vietnam vet, won his age group in 48:45.
Adrian Thomas, 45, of Salisbury, Md., won the 40-49 age group in 22:00. He won the same age group in 2024 with a time of 21:55.

The next Races2Run event at the beach is the Community Matter Foundation 5K set for 7:30 a.m., Saturday, Aug. 9, at Northbeach restaurant In Dewey Beach.
