We must support electric vehicles

May 16, 2023

To address the most pressing challenge of climate change, one which defines the contours of the 21st century, we must support electric vehicles; their use saves energy (over 100 mpg) and lessens pollution (saving billions of dollars by avoiding damages from extreme weather and sea-level rise), thereby making climate change much less devastating.

Too, we must work to make EV supply chains more sustainable. To avoid the degradation of rainforests, of landscapes, of water and of communities, we must insist on recycled minerals, especially aluminum, as they can contribute significantly to the sustainable production of EVs and their batteries.

Given the dire nature of climate change, all of us must respond with actions including more thoughtful recycling, conservation and education (remember, to recycle just one aluminum can saves enough energy to power a computer for several hours). Our life-sustaining and wondrous natural world deserves nothing less.
