Women’s Club of Milton member honored for volunteerism

May 29, 2025

Women’s Club of Milton member Marie Johnson was recently recognized for 25 years of community service.

Volunteer Delaware 50+ Sussex County presented Johnson with a glass prism and certificate honoring her dedication to the Milton community.

Johnson was a founding club member since 1973, when it was known as the Milton Century Club. She served the organization as president and/or co-president for a period of six years. She also served as treasurer for six years and membership chair for another four. From the beginning, Johnson has been an integral part of the club family, participating in countless events and activities to serve the community.

Of special note, in 2001, Johnson helped member Evelyn Hopkins develop the Comfort Bears program which continues to this day. Members create stuffed fabric bears complete with stitched or painted faces to be given to children undergoing difficult transitions. The group meets once a month at Johnson’s home, then distributes finished bears to area schools and hospitals.

Johnson said, “[I am] proud of the work we have done.”

Gathered for the presentation are (l-r) honoree Marie Johnson; Betty Ann Dawson-Christ, Women’s Club of Milton president; and Bobbi Jo Tice, Volunteer Delaware 50+ Sussex County coordinator.
