Women's lacrosse coming to Delaware State University
Hornets sting again - Delaware State University is a surprising place. There is a flight school with its own student pilots who do flyovers at football games, and the women's sports programs include equestrian and bowling. And now the Hornets have added women's lacrosse, which will be a fully funded Division I program that will begin competition in spring 2013. The newly appointed coach is Jillian Lontz, a former standout at crosstown Wesley College, who most recently served as an assistant women's lacrosse coach at her alma mater.
During the 2011 season, Wesley set a team scoring record and placed six players on the Capital Athletic Conference All-Academic Team. Lontz is also the former head coach at Caesar Rodney.
Lontz credits Wesley College head women's lacrosse coach Debbie Windett, a Delaware high school coaching legend, with helping to prepare her for the move to DSU. Debbie's daughter Kate now teaches at Cape and is an assistant in field hockey and lacrosse.
“Fully funded” means the Hornets have a full boat of scholarship money available for lacrosse.
Finding 400 - Joe McCoy, 23, was the first-place finisher in the Pumpkin Pie 5K, beating almost 400 other runners by running a 4:58 mile pace for a 15:28 final time. Joe seemed unimpressed with himself, knowing in the world of elite runners he could encounter 400 people in Kenya alone who could beat him.
I wondered whether, with all the people I know, I could recruit 400 people to a 5K race, all of whom I could beat. The last time I ran, New Year's Day 2011 on my way into the ocean, I blew out my right quad and was so injured I couldn't drive for three weeks, let alone run.
I think I could find 400 broken-down jalopies whom I'm sure I could beat in a single day and only some of them would be in joint-replacement waiting rooms.
Boy named Suh - Ndamukong Suh of the Lions is going to miss a pair of paydays at $87,500 a check, all because he pushed Packers' guard Evan Dietrich Smith's head into the ground, then kicked down on his right arm like Smith was a Harley after he got up.
Cruel big guys are rare in contact sports, and Suh is an engaging personality who does Subway commercials, so it all doesn't fit because if that dude was ever out in public and went rogue, there would bodies flying all over the place. I also noticed not one Packer took a run at Suh, who is 6-foot-4 and 307 pounds of mean muscle and only 24 years old. Suh has a degree in engineering; his father is from Cameroon and his mother is Jamaican and was an elementary school teacher. He has a Cameroon grandfather who is 7-foot-3. He gifted $2.5 million to the University of Nebraska for a strength and conditioning program. Play hard, Ndamukong, but not rough - everybody's Kong Suh fighting.
One lump or two - I went to Catholic school for 12 years and have the startle reflex to prove it; Immaculate Heart nuns and Franciscan priests wore my face and hands out, and they wondered why I let a smirk be my umbrella on a rainy day. I was whacked, slapped, smacked, knuckled and sneak attacked. I had no idea what celibacy meant, but now I know it means "prone to spontaneous violence against class clowns." I am proof that violence is not recycled as I never once in 35 years of teaching wanted to hit a student, but if I had been Celibacy Man bodies would have been dropping all over the place.
What was I talking about? - We have all lost our train of thought, more so today when conversations are interrupted by vibrations and noises coming from pants pockets. During the Coolspring Turkey Bowl, game referee Bo Gooch threw a flag and called, “Four men on the line of scrimmage. You got to have five," but a linebacker clarified the rule for Bo: ”Man, we on defense.” Bo thought about it, then picked up the flag.
Snippets - The Cape girls' basketball team opens the season at 6 p.m., Tuesday, Dec. 6, at home versus Smyrna. Cape lost to the Eagles twice last season, but Betnijah Laney, Crystal Ross, Jacalyn Jenkins and Jasmine Hilliard have all graduated. Laney is a starting guard for the 7-0 Scarlet Knights of Rutgers, along with Kadija Rushdan, former St. Elizabeth star. Crystal Ross is coming off the bench for the 4-0 James Madison Dukes. The battle of undefeated football teams Indian River versus Caravel for the Division 2 state title is at 7 p.m., Saturday, Dec. 3, at Delaware State. This game is a culture clash - Go Indians!
Go on now, git!
