During the month of February, Worcester Preparatory School students shared the love of language through their French, Mandarin, and Spanish classes.
As part of her lesson on the Chinese New Year, the most important holiday in Chinese-speaking countries, Mandarin teacher Ashley Lin taught her students how to make dumplings (or jiǎozi in Mandarin). Dumplings symbolize longevity and wealth and are a traditional must-eat food on Chinese New Year’s Eve. Prior to making dumplings, her beginner Mandarin students studied about Chinese New Year food, Chinese Zodiac, the 15 Days of New Year and Lantern Festival along with a poster presentation project. In addition to enriching students’ cultural knowledge, this activity brings good luck to the students for the coming Rat year. French teacher Elaine Burg and her students in French I, II and III created thoughtful Valentine’s cards and wrote get-well wishes in French to sick children in the Montreal Children’s Hospital.
