World religions course to begin in Lewes April 13

March 26, 2017

The Unitarian Universalists of Southern Delaware will host a special five-week course on world religious traditions from 7 to 8:30 p.m., Thursdays starting April 13. The course, Seeking the World's Wisdom, is open to everyone. The course provides an opportunity to learn not just the facts about a particular religion, but also the underlying meanings and purposes that make religion relevant.

The course consists of viewing and discussing a series of five interviews (55 minutes each) held by journalist Bill Moyers with Huston Smith, renowned scholar of world religions and pioneer of interfaith understanding. The interviews contain Smith's presentation of the various faiths’ core beliefs and practices, as well as his own personal experiences and interpretations of their meanings. Smith reviews his lifelong search for ever-deeper wisdom in the world's major religions. He says, "If we take the world's enduring religions at their best, we discover the distilled wisdom of the human race."

Facilitators for the course are Len Bowman and David Roell LeClaire. Bowman teaches at Johns Hopkins University; he holds a PhD in religion and literature, and he counts Smith among his teachers. Roell LeClaire has traveled to India, Europe, Africa, and China exploring world religions, philosophy, and metaphysics. He holds a PhD in metaphysics and religions from Westbrook University, and has taught and lectured on magic, myth and story.

The course will be held at UUSD, 30486 Lewes-Georgetown Highway, Lewes. Advance registration is not required. A one-time $10 donation is requested. Proceeds will support UUSD's mission to nurture spiritual growth, embrace diversity, work for justice and strive for a loving world. UUSD is a welcoming and progressive spiritual community.
