YMCA announces new summer day camp at Lewes Elementary
The YMCA of Delaware recently announced the launch of YMCA Camp Lewes, a new summer day camp designed to serve families across Sussex County. YMCA Camp Lewes will run from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., weekdays, June 22 through Aug. 14, and will be held at Lewes Elementary School, 820 Savannah Road, Lewes. In addition, a half-day option from 12 to 4 p.m. will be available.
The addition of Camp Lewes builds on the strong community response following the recent launch of YMCA Camp Millsboro. With families quickly embracing expanded summer programming options, the YMCA is continuing to invest in Sussex County to meet growing demand and ensure more children have access to safe, enriching summer experiences.
“The response to Camp Millsboro made one thing clear: Families in this region need more options,” said LoriKay Paden, Sussex Family YMCA executive director and community vice president. “YMCA Camp Lewes is a direct reflection of that need and our commitment to ensure every child has a place to learn grow, and belong during the summer months.”
The expansion of both Camp Millsboro and Camp Lewes is part of the YMCA of Delaware’s effort to address what has been identified as a “childcare desert” in the region, where access to affordable, high-quality summer care is limited. Without structured summer options, many children spend increased time indoors and on devices, missing out on critical opportunities for physical activity, social interaction and hands-on learning. This imbalance has been linked to rising concerns around youth mental health, including anxiety, sleep disruption and attention challenges.
YMCA summer camps are designed to combat these challenges by providing engaging, screen-free environments where children can build confidence, develop friendships and stay active. These programs also play a vital role in supporting working families. By offering consistent, full-day care throughout the summer, the YMCA helps parents remain in the workforce without compromising their child’s safety or development.
“Expanding access to summer camp is about strengthening families and our community as a whole,” said Georganne Buccine, YMCA of Delaware vice president of youth development. “Access to summer programming is not just a convenience; it’s a critical community need. When families cannot find reliable childcare, it can impact employment, economic stability, and long-term opportunities for both parents and children. At the same time, children without access to enriching summer experiences are more likely to experience learning loss and widening opportunity gaps.”
YMCA Camp Lewes will offer a variety of age-appropriate activities focused on youth development, healthy living and social connection, including outdoor play, arts and crafts, team-building activities and more.
Financial assistance is available through the YMCA’s Open Doors program to ensure all families have the opportunity to participate.
