Zac Oakley wins 57th Delaware Open

Congratulations to Zac Oakley of Bidermann Golf Club for his Aug. 23 Delaware Open victory at Plantation Lakes Golf & Country Club. The seven-under triumph was his second Open win, the first one coming in 2015.

Golf pro Michael Chanaud of Bear Trap Dunes and Kings Creek Country Club teaching pro Chris Krueger tied for seventh as the top Cape Region competitors. Amateur Jay Whitby of Rehoboth Beach Country Club tied for ninth. Pros Chris Gray of RBCC and Jesse Williams of The Peninsula Golf & Country Club tied for 17th.

Other Cape Region golfers who made the cut included pros Chris Osberg (Mulligan’s Pointe), Josh Covey (Heritage Shores), Bryce Young (Bayside Resort) and Andy Hewitt (Cripple Creek), as well as amateur Ed Brown (RBCC).

RBCC Ladies Summer Member-Guest

Rehoboth Beach Country Club held its 2022 Ladies Summer Member-Guest tournament Aug. 24, with Kerry Lockwood, Jennifer Mirabella, Jullie Burton and Kimi Hutchinson winning the overall championship.

Genine Fidler, Rebecca Krimski, Carroll Knott and Paula Campbell won first gross. MK Wills-Smith, Andi Carpenter, Barb Collins and Sue Grenert won first flight net, with Peggy Roca, Janice Calomiris, Tina Brinsfield and Amy Micholas in second.

Elise Coar, June Allen, Lora Drewer and Deb Ward won second flight net, with Annie Castertano, Mary Wolff, Wesley Preuss and Lane Strand in second.

RBCC match play winners

Congratulations to Kim Stockson and Lora Drewer for winning the 2022 Rehoboth Beach CC JoJo Barrows Match Play Championship. They defeated Peggy Roca and Shelby Moore in the finals one-up. This summer-long contest uses the better ball of partner format.

Techno Goober Challenge Sept. 24

The folks at local IT wizards Techno Goober will hold their first Goober Golf Challenge Sept. 24 at Stenger’s Shamrock Farms Par 3 Golf Course near Milton.

Proceeds will support the Delmarva Outlaws baseball team as part of Techno Goober’s longtime effort to promote youth sports.

Check-in begins at 7:30 a.m. for the 8 a.m. start that features a few twists from the usual game, such as using a marshmallow for a golf ball on one hole.

All ages can play, with permission slips required for competing children.

Registration ($90 per foursome) can be done online at goober.golf or the day of the event. Playing slots for the 18-team field are filling up, according to Über Goober Frank Payton, so recruit your team quickly.

First Tee Seaford Scramble

The First Tee-Delaware will hold its inaugural Seaford Scramble fundraiser tournament Oct. 8 at Hooper’s Landing Golf Course in Seaford.

Proceeds from the event will support First Tee programs in Seaford and surrounding communities, working with partners such as Big Brothers Big Sisters and area school districts.

The $150 per golfer fee covers the round, beverages, contests, raffles and prizes, as well as a post-round cookout.

Local club competition results

The Kings Creek Country Club Ladies 18-Hole group played a Three Blind Mice game Aug. 18, throwing out the scores from holes 4, 9 and 11.

Anita Pettitt won first flight gross. Jeannine Doane won first flight net, with Linda Kelleher in second and Judy Wetzel in third.

Linda Eicher won second flight gross. Barbara Hines won second flight net, with Joanne Yurik in second by a tiebreaker over Leslie Ledogar.

The Rehoboth Beach CC Ladies 18-Hole group played a 1, 2, 2 game Aug. 17, using one best ball on the par 3s and two best balls on the par 4s and 5s. Dale Gross, Barb Collins, Bailey Scheurer and Sally Fogarty won first place gross.

Elise Coar, Trish Medd, MK Wills-Smith and blind draw Suzanne Moore won first net. Two teams tied on a match of cards for second net: Kim Stockson, Lora Drewer, Peggy Roca and Shelby Moore, and Patty Lessy, Pat Beebe, JoJo Barrows and Sheila Halfpenny.

The Mulligan’s Pointe Ladies 18-Hole group played a Crier’s Game Aug. 23. Peggy Claussen won the first division, with Linda Kaufman in second and Janece Hausch in third. Mary Louise York won the second division, with Pam Pichola in second and Chris Allison in third.

The Mulligan’s group also played a 2 better balls of 4 game Aug. 16. Carmela Boyle, Diane Braver and Kathy Hudak took first place. Brenda Joyce, Linda Kaufmann and Susan Shockley finished second.

The Kings Creek CC Ladies 9-Hole group played a Three Blind Mice game Aug. 16, eliminating scores from holes 13, 14 and 16.

Marie Murray won first flight gross. Chris Emery won first flight net, with Carolyn Horn in second and Sandy Neverett in third. Kara Bourdreau won second flight gross. Denise Stewart won second flight net, with Lisa Gercenstein in second and Karen Harrington in third.

Beth Cohen won third flight gross. Patricia Davis won third flight net, with Margaret Rebarchik in second and Kathy Andrus in third. Tish Brey won fourth flight gross. Pam Cranston won fourth flight net, with Nancy Derrickson in second and Ellan Hylton in third.
