CHHS Student-Athletes Collect Apparel for Hurricane Harvey Victims

Cape Henlopen School District
November 17, 2017

For those of us in the Cape region, it may seem as though Hurricane Harvey has long since been forgotten about. As a community, we made donations, collected food, hygiene items, and water, packed it all up and sent it to our friends in the south who needed our help. But when Hurricane Harvey struck Texas, Mens' Basketball Coach at the University of Houston, Kelvin Sampson, also put a call out to coaches around the country. He asked teams to help out by donating athletic apparel. As the coordinator of the project, Sampson wanted to make sure student-athletes were prepared for their season as usual throughout the state of Texas, despite the devastation caused by Hurricane Harvey. It was the mission of Sampson and the Cougars’ men’s basketball team to collect and distribute as many donated clothing items as possible for families in their community who were affected by the flooding. Student-athletes at Cape Henlopen High School were quick to jump on the Cougars’ bandwagon and helped University of Houston players achieve their mission by collecting athletic gear over the last few weeks to be packaged and sent to Texas.

On Friday, November 17, members of the field hockey, baseball, lacrosse, and softball teams helped pack the Cape Vikings apparel in boxes to ship to Texas. Thank you to those students, families, and teams who collected and donated items!
