Friday at Firefly!

Jettyrat’s Firefly Blog – Friday at Firefly

63 Days to Firefly

Friday at Firefly. Welcome to the big time. You are fresh and fired up from a nice little Thursday night appetizer. You aren’t at work and you have a full day of awesome music ahead!

Last year on Friday I saw:

  1. Lonely Biscuits – really fun show
  2. The Wombats – from the side of the stage which was pretty crazy, see picture
  3. Saint Motel – Good not great would love to see them at a smaller venue
  4. Fitz and the Tantrums – So good I saw them again in the fall
  5. A little bit Of Monsters and Men
  6. Ellie Goulding – Wasn’t my thing but I was with a lot of people who thought that was one of the best shows of the weekend
  7. Guster at The Coffee House – Didn’t expect anything and thoroughly enjoyed
  8. Kings of Leon – Didn’t do much for me but I was pretty beat by then

That’s a pretty solid day of music. I missed Boy and Bear, and Finish Ticket at the Treehouse due to conflicts with the above list. I also missed The Shelters, who must not have been on Spotify at that time last year. I love “Liar” and it would have been cool to see them to start the day. So it goes….

For this year if I had to pick a single day ticket, this would be it. Seven must sees, eight take a chance bands. No way in hell the schedule will work out for me to see all seven must sees or even half of the take a chance bands. We will have to wait and make the hard decisions once we have times, and pray for some coffee house or tree house second shows.

Must sees on Friday – Twenty One Pilots, Weezer, Franz Ferdinand, Judah & The Lion, Shaed, Stick Figure, Foreign Air.

Twenty One Pilots – Just go see them already!

Weezer – I’m pretty excited for this show, I have never seen them live and I am expecting big things.

Franz Ferdinand – If you read previous blog post I’m nervous about this show, always worry about bands hitting a festival without a new album. Fingers crossed I’m wrong.

Judah & The Lion – One of the more rockin’ banjolin bands. I’d go see them just for “Take It All Back” but I like a lot of other songs as well and this should be a good one.

Shaed – Great vocals, a lot of songs that I like. Not really sure what to expect live, but I definitely want to give them a try. They are playing in Philly May 5th with Bishop Briggs, maybe I’ll go for a preview. :) If you haven’t heard their cover of Starboy, go look it up right now.

Stick Figure – Hat tip to my friend Kris, who recommended this band. Jam band meets reggae sounds, so many songs already added to my summer playlist. Frickin’ Firefly better not schedule them at 2:00AM like they did Pepper last year….

Foreign Air – This band was highlighted on a previous post. The more I listen the more I like. Mark this one down as a must see. Feel free to use this as one of your secret go to’s to impress your friends who haven’t heard of this band.

Take a chance bands – Miike Snow, Ok Go, Banks, Bob Moses, Sofi Tukker, Meg Mac, Sir The Baptist, Dreamers

Miike Snow –  Like the songs Ghengis Khan and Animal, will check it out if schedule allows.

Ok Go – I feel like I should like this band more than I do. I haven’t quite gotten over the hump with them but their music seems like it would lend itself to a fun high energy show.

Banks – I stumbled across “Begging for Thread” a couple of years ago and have always loved that song. I tend to prefer high energy concerts at Firefly, it’s a long damn weekend and you need all the energy you can to get through! Don’t know if Banks would qualify as that but she has a lot of great music, we’ll see how schedule shakes out.

Bob Moses, Sofi Tukker, Meg Mac, Sir The Baptist, and the Dreamers all have individual songs that I like, but as of right now it isn’t enough to move them up the list. Still have plenty of listening to do though. Let’s say I’m still intrigued by these bands and don’t want to dismiss any of these yet.

Most of these bands are highlighted on my Firefly 2017 Singles playlist. You can check out the early singles that are jumping out here https://open.spotify.com/user/jettyrat/playlist/35ZQMDavvAiKBMF16k2AXf.

A Friday deep dive playlist will be following.

Until next time... Jettyrat out. Happy listening.
