Hover Down

This flying insect presented on my car one day last week when it was warm, and he was squirming around, and doing something weird with his thorax, at first I thought it was some kind of bee, in trouble, so I asked my on call Bee-Spert Molly.

She said "That is a hover fly and looks like innards are coming out."

That sounds tragic and terrible if you ask me, for a bee or a fly, so of course my followup question is, "Why?"

"Perils of insectdom" she typed back.

Well, it looks kind of pretty in this photo and I'm practicing with my macro lens so here he is. RIP I guess & I hope a robin got him for breakfast.
