PLAY WITH YOUR FOOD

OK, Kids, time to play with your food!

Is your garden brimming over with weird and wonderful veggies?  If not, check out your local farmers market or the produce section of the grocery store.  Look for unique shapes, sizes and colors.  And grab a child to help find some new and interesting whole foods.  Gather your raw materials (tomatoes, cukes, peppers, beans, potatoes, squash, herbs, etc.). Gather your tools (toothpicks, paring knife, plates, etc.) Now set your imagination free! But don’t get too attached to your creations, because they just might become someone’s lunch!

Dr. Michael Greger documents the role of playfulness in encouraging children to increase their intake of veggies and fruit at home and at school in his wise and wonderful free daily nutrition facts videos (http://nutritionfacts.org/video/tricks-to-get-kids-to-eat-healthier-at-school/).  He points out that simply naming plain carrots, X-RAY VISION CARROTS, and naming plain broccoli, TINY TREE TOPS, dramatically increases veggie consumption by children.

So play with your food and get creative with food names for the sake of kids of all ages!
