Bertha Mae (Cannon) Hall, witness to God

Bertha Mae (Cannon) Hall of Millsboro, departed her earthly journey at Beebe Healthcare, Lewes, surrounded by her family and friends Sunday, Aug. 14, 2016. Bertha the second of three siblings, was born Aug. 17, 1931, in Millsboro, to loving parents, the late Raymond and Esther Cannon.
She was raised and resided in Millsboro her entire life. She attended Millsboro Colored School #204. On April 12, 1948, she was joined in Holy Matrimony to Samuel Hall.
It was in elementary school at the age of 6 where she met Marian Cannon, her confidant and lifelong friend of 79 years. They shared a bond that could not be broken. Although they were sisters-in-law, in reality they were more like sisters. What one didn't think of, the other did. She was the quiet and reserved one of the two. Whenever they engaged in debate, Bert always reminded "Maren" that she was the oldest.
During her professional career, Bert was employed by Townsend Poultry for 22 years. She also did domestic work for a number of families in the Millsboro area. She formed a special bond with two of the families, Greg and Charlotte Hastings and Jane Hall. She loved people and enjoyed helping others.
In the late 1960s Bert joined the body of Christ and became a member of Dickerson Chapel AME Church (formerly Old Field Church). She served on the Usher Board and was as member of the Senior Choir. She also faithfully served as a stewardess and attended church school on a regular basis. She would often reflect on her favorite scripture Psalm 37:25 which states "I have been young and now am old, yet I have not seen the righteous forsaken nor His seed begging for bread."
Bert was preceded in death by her husband, the late Samuel Hall; two brothers, Prince Edward Cannon and James Leon Cannon Sr.
Although she had no biological children, she was blessed to have many nieces and nephews who loved her dearly and affectionately called her "Aunt Bert or Aunt Sis." She loved them equally and was a positive and instrumental influence in their upbringing. She took great pride in being their aunt. She loved the Lord, her family and friends. She prepared many delicious meals for her family. She also loved gardening and taking care of her flowers.
She was blessed and favored by God with a humble and sweet loving spirit. She was a mighty witness to the goodness of God. She will be missed for her quiet demeanor, sense of humor, and most of all, her love.
Funeral services were held Friday, Aug. 19, at Dickerson Chapel AME Church in Millsboro. Burial followed at Old Field Cemetery in Millsboro.
