The Cape Henlopen grapplers used three forfeits and two pins to help down visiting Sanford 55-17 Jan. 28. The Vikings gave Sanford 12 of their points via forfeits at the 106 and 113 weight classes.
Holden Kammerer (195), Billy Ott (220), Zack Flores (285), Mason Karrow (138) and Cory Lawson (160) all picked up six points via forfeits. Cape’s Anthony Caruso defeated Trent Wall 8-6 at 120, Andre Currie won by an 18-6 major decision over Jason Lamey at 126, Max Norquest decisioned Kyle McDonough 8-5 at 132, and Dante Jaquet won by a 10-8 decision over Timmy Griffith at 152.
Vinnie Diego (145) pinned Cory Frederick at 5:54, while Chris Handlin (182) pinned Spencer Green at 1:12.
“Sanford is banged up, which is unfortunate,” said Cape coach Chris Mattioni. “They have a talented team, and we knew they had a couple of quality guys.
“Max [Norquest] wrestled Kyle McDonough and Dante [Jaquet] beat Timmy Griffith, who were state placers,” Mattioni continued. “I’m real proud of how Norquest wrestled. He almost got pinned, and battled back and won that match, which is a real good victory for him. Dante’s match was probably the highlight of the day just in terms of wrestling because it was a back-and-forth of high-level wrestling, and Dante was able to keep attacking and come out with the two-point victory.”
The Vikings’ coach, in his 22nd season, was happy with his entire squad for their overall performance.
“Overall, our guys wrestled really well, and that’s what we want. Even when we wrestled guys that weren’t that good, we came out and we were staying in good position and doing things that we’ve been working on in practice. Overall, it was a great win.”
