Beacon girls place second at the Capital Classic

Boys fall to Prestige Middle

The Beacon Middle School girls’ team jumped out 9-0 over Caravel before the Bucs knew what hit them, but a scrappy Caravel squad took the game to a double overtime and left with a 39-33 victory over the Vikings in the Capital Classic Injury Lawyers Championship. 

Mehkia Applewhite scored 18 points for the Vikings.

Beacon defeated Thomas Edison Charter School 30-15 in the opening game. Haley Craig chipped in seven and Ella Rishko scored six. Applewhite received All-Tournament Team honors. Craig received the Sportsmanship Award.

The Beacon Middle boys’ team fell to Prestige Middle School in the first game 47-31. Tiarnan Hefferan scored 12 points for the Vikings, while Kayvon Allen added seven.

Dan has worked for the Cape Gazette for more than 30 years as a photographer and reporter, covering high school sports and happenings around eastern Sussex County. He won a photography award from the National Newspaper Association, and numerous awards from the Maryland, Delaware, D.C. Press Association. A Delaware native, Dan graduated from Cape in 1972 and returned as a teacher and coach in the 1980s. He retired from the classroom in 2016. He was inducted into Cape High’s Legends Stadium in 2016. In his spare time, Dan enjoys spending time with his wife, two sons, grandchildren and dogs.
