Delaware Hospice honors its volunteers at Volunteer Recognition Dinner in Sussex County
From the early days of its founding, Delaware Hospice has been empowered by the passion and dedication of its volunteers. Today, 850 individuals throughout the state of Delaware are actively involved in supporting the not-for-profit organization’s programs and services in the community.
To honor those generous volunteers, Delaware Hospice held a Volunteer Recognition Dinner at the Georgetown CHEER Center, with the theme “Volunteers - Touching Lives, Lifting Spirits.” One hundred sixty-five volunteers and guests attended the event, where in each of its three counties, where volunteers who reached a five-year service mark received awards.
Delaware Hospice President and CEO Susan Lloyd personally thanked the volunteers at each dinner, saying, “Please know that we couldn’t do it without you. Whether you are visiting patients and families, reaching out to them with a telephone call, helping keep our files current, or helping out with a fundraising event, your contributions and your commitment to our organization’s mission are truly appreciated.”
Volunteer Pat Monaghan was recognized for 25 years of service. Volunteer coordinator for Sussex County Mary Costello said, “Pat Monaghan has done just about everything since joining Delaware Hospice. She has supported patients and families by visiting them in their homes, through bereavement calls, and she’s helped our Community Ed Department educate the public about hospice care at health fairs. Many years ago, when the idea for a children’s bereavement camp was just being discussed, Pat suggested the name, ‘Camp New Hope,’” and became a Camp volunteer. Even when she’s in Florida, Pat keeps up her weekly “care call” visits with patients.”
Pat accepted her award, and spoke about her many years as a Delaware Hospice volunteer. Her underlying motivation is “If I can help in the smallest way to heal a hurt, I want to do what I can.” And for 25 years, she has succeeded to do so, in many small and large ways.
