‘Aida’ to open at Cape April 28

April 27, 2017

The Cape Henlopen High School Theatre Academy will close its 2016-17 season with the powerful musical "Aida." Sir Elton John's stirring score, paired with lyrics by Sir Tim Rice, have made "Aida" one of the most compelling Broadway musicals of its era. Based on Verdi's opera, "Aida" completes this season's theme of forbidden love.

"Aida" will run Friday and Sunday, April 28 and 30, and Friday to Sunday, May 5 to 7. Friday and Saturday evening performances begin at 8 p.m. Sunday matinees begin at 2 p.m. There will not be a performance Saturday evening, April 29. Ticket price for adults is $10, $5 for students and senior citizens. Tickets can be purchased in advance, and are also available at the door.

Cape Theatre Director Martha E. Pfeiffer said, "When I first chose to direct 'Romeo and Juliet' in the fall, 'Aida' became the logical bookend to the season's theme. At the time, I did not fully realize how relevant this production would be. In light of current events, the power of this timeless theme rings truer than ever: that the power of love can dissolve life's most challenging obstacles." Conflict between Egypt and Nubia gives birth to a star-crossed love affair between Aida, the captured princess of Nubia, and Radames, the Egyptian captain who enslaved her people. With love and responsibility at odds, Aida and Radames must decide to follow their hearts or lead their people.

"This has been one of our most challenging productions to date," said Pfeiffer. "The incredible talent of our cast, led by Tasha Shanelle Hopkins in the title role and local favorite Savannah Shockley as Princess Amneris, with Adrian D'Antoni in the role of Captain Radames, combined with the exciting choreography of our guest artist K.T. Thomas, and Kevin Brown's scenic design, promises not to disappoint. We are all very proud to bring this production to Cape's stage."
