Transcendental Jam Session: Kirtan set at Milton Theatre Sept. 20

September 14, 2017

Milton Theatre will host Transcendental Jam Session: Kirtan at 6 p.m., Wednesday, Sept. 20.

Kirtan is a form of devotional chanting whose roots go back over 5,000 years to India. It is a form of Bhakti Yoga (yoga of devotion) and has the power to open and purify the heart. The singing is accompanied by musical instruments and rhythmic drumming, and the audience is encouraged to participate by chanting, clapping and dancing.

This has been a monthly staple at the theatre for the past year, attracting followers of the tradition within Sussex County and beyond. The benefits of kirtan cannot be explained in words; it has to be experienced in order to be understood. It might take a little while to get used to an unfamiliar experience, but only when a person sits down, moves toward one’s own inner space, and then sings out, will a person start to know what kirtan really is. Because at that time, the soul will rise up and start to dance.

Entry is $5 and donations are taken to cover the full Indian feast that is provided. To purchase tickets, go to or call 302-684-3038.
