The Milton Historical Society is seeking both new and longtime residents of the region to serve as museum docents at its Lydia Black Cannon Museum in historic downtown Milton. Docents are museum hosts who welcome visitors and act as guides and interpreters of the exhibit. Since the museum reopened in April 2006, more than 70 people have participated in docent training and now volunteer regularly.
The docent training program is a great way to learn about the fascinating history of the area, as well as how to share that knowledge with visitors to the museum. Anyone who is a friendly person who loves meeting new people, learning and sharing is qualified for this important volunteer position.
As hosts and guides, docents make important contributions to the vitality of the museum. Without docents, the museum could not be open on a regularly scheduled basis. The museum is often the first stop for visitors to Milton, so docents help visitors discover all the many other attractions in the town and in the area.
Docents are required to attend a three-session training class, and commit themselves to a minimum of four hours volunteer time per month between Memorial Day and Labor Day. In addition, they will attend two continuing education events per year and volunteer for a minimum of four hours per quarter in the off seasons. The next training class will be held from 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., Saturdays, Nov. 4, 11 and 18.
