Edna M. Steele, loved baking cakes

Edna M. Steele, 85, of Dagsboro, departed this life at Atlantic Shores Rapid Recovery in Millsboro, Friday, Oct. 20, 2017.

Edna was born Jan. 30, 1932, in Selbyville, the daughter of Harry Townsend Sr. and Eva (Justice) Townsend.

Edna had her own in-home business as a seamstress and loved to cook, even having her own catering business at one time. She was known for her coconut cakes that were auctioned at fundraising events for many different organizations and charities of which she was a member. She was always baking cakes for loved ones, the elderly or sick.

She was a life member of the Mason-Dixon VFW Post 7234 and the Dagsboro American Legion. She held many offices at each of these organizations. She had also been active in the Eagles and Moose organizations.

Edna was predeceased by her husband of 69 years and the love of her life, Albert H. Steele Sr. in July 2017. Edna was also predeceased by her brother, Richard A. Townsend; sisters, Eileen Reynolds and Coleta Dorey; and her great-grandchild, George Jenkins Jr.

She is survived by her daughters, Sharon S. Joseph and husband Clifford of Harbeson, Diane Jenkins and husband Robert of Georgetown; and sons Albert H. Steele Jr. and friend Tina Lofland of Georgetown, and Brian K. Steele and his fiancée Chris Waltz of Milton. She is also survived by eight grandchildren; and one great-grandchild; her brother, Harry Townsend Jr. and wife Nora; sister-in-law, Annette Hammond; and brother-in-law John Wilkinson. She is also survived by many nieces and nephews.

A visitation was held from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., Tuesday, Oct. 24, at the Frankford Chapel of Melson Funeral Services, 43 Thatcher St., Frankford. The funeral service began at 12:30 p.m., with interment at the Delaware Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Millsboro.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions in Edna's name to Dagsboro Volunteer Fire Company, PO Box 128, Dagsboro, DE 19939 for all of the times that they responded to her needs over the years.
