Ah, the crisp fall air is finally here (for most of us, that is).

In between your apple-picking and pumpkin spice latte-drinking adventures, take some time to prep your home for the coming colder weather. Use this checklist to get started (and maybe treat yourself to a caramel apple when the work is all done) …

Take it From the Top.
Check your roof for any loose shingles that need to be repaired before winter. Also, clean out the gutters and consider installing a mesh barrier system to prevent them from getting clogged again.

Drain Outside Faucets.
Use shut-off valves to stop the water flow to outdoor faucets. Then turn on your outside faucet to drain the water still inside the pipes. This will prevent water from freezing inside (and damaging) your pipes.

Seal it Up.
Inspect all windows and doors for gaps that may allow heat to escape during the winter. Use caulk or weather stripping to seal up cracks. You’ll thank yourself when the winter utility bills start arriving in the mailbox.

Stay Safe.
Make sure all your smoke and carbon monoxide detectors are operating correctly. Inspect and/or replace your fire extinguisher, and get rid of any potential fire hazards (such as piles of papers). Review your fire escape plan with your family (especially if you have small children).

Don’t forget the furnace.
Clean your furnace filter (or replace it, if you have a disposable one) so it’s ready to go for the winter. It’s also a good idea to have a professional inspect your furnace and HVAC system for any concerns, especially if you live in a climate where temps get below freezing in the winter.

These can all be easily done in a weekend, and will give you peace of mind as you head into the winter season. Now, it’s about time for that caramel apple…
